At the age of 11 there were only two things that I used to run after. One was Ann Renton a girl I had a massive crush on while at Bothal Middle School. She was so pretty and lovely and special....ok I think you get it. Anyway I used to chase after her on Bothal middle school playing field the trouble was she was in the school netball team and pretty quick and I was the the chubby kid who after chasing her for 30 seconds would fall down in a heap in the middle of the field gasping for breath ! It did have its advantages though because she thought I was funny and sweet and she would come and sit on me while giggling away to her friends !
Ok more information than you need to know but the other thing that I used to chase after was the Ice cream van that used to drive up the back lane on a Summers day.
No matter what I was doing the tinny sound of "Oranges and lemons." blasting from the vans speaker would cause me to stop immediately and then go and nag my parents for money to go and buy a Mr Whippy Ice-Cream cone.
The nice man in a white coat smoking a fag would then pour the ice-cream into a crunchy cone. Then with the skill of a great artist place half a Chocolate flake and a drizzle of strawberry coulis over and into the soft melting creamy ice-cream.
I would run into a quiet area of our back Garden where no one would trouble me and then devour the ice cream savouring every moment. Sometimes I would bite the end off the cone and suck the ice-cream out that way. It would have made quite a stage act at the time and certainly rivalled the "Krankies"
Anyway the Other day I went for a drive to Amble which is a small fishing port about 8 miles from where I live to take a few snaps and for some reason the weather was nice and I remembered back to my childhood and really fancied some ice-cream.
Luckily down near the harbour where I was taking a few pics is Spurrelis Ice-cream parlour and it was their I purchased a tub of lovely Ginger and Elderberry Ice cream. I went and sat outside on the cafes metal seats and with every mouthful of delicious ice cream childhood memories came flooding back. Tears filled my eyes as I remembered happy childhood summer days when life was simple. I say it a lot at the moment but "Life moves pretty fast !"
An old lady walking a dog asked if I was alright as I wiped the tears that were streaming down my cheeks away.
Yes...Im fine..its just the sun in my eyes."
She smiled politely and walked on.
Its funny but food can spark so many memories and I realise how much of a part of my life it has been. It Fuels us yes but it comforts us to when we are in need of comfort. I guess I must have needed comforting a lot in my life ha ha.
Any how the ice-cream was beautiful and I highly recommend it if you are in the area.
I sat and finished my tub of lovely ice-cream off dreaming and hoping Ann Renton would walk by just like a scene in a movie. She never came. I picked my camera up and went and took some more pictures. I hope you like them...Enjoy.
